A Patriot

Fighting for years,

changed him so much.

He saw only a  stranger

when looked into the mirror.

Darkness engulfed him,

drowned in despair.

Hope withered away,

And so did his trust in destiny.

Fate butchered his dreams,

shattered his beliefs.

Unknown to the people,

endured a lot, for them.

Slept in freezing snow,

with the dark sky as his blanket.

Holding on to a rifle and few grenades,

his empty stomach

used to being hungry

stopped making any more noise.

As the early sun shined upon him,

the warm rays of life.

Smiled with his chapped lips,

and squinting eyes

he was glad, he had another day

in front of him.

He was a son, a father, a husband

And above all, he was a patriot.
