A Warrior’s Leave

Many days it’s been, and so many nights,

Constantly, I had fought many fights.

The battle to win always goes on,

In this war, I am just a pawn.

I was lucky, relieved I was,

For now, from my duty and death’s jaws.

Many didn’t get to go home, even if wanted,

Their bodies buried, but ghosts, still haunted.

Amidst all the pain, endured I,

Didn’t have the time to cry.

After all, I was going back to my family,

Excited, reached my city finally.

Everything was the same, the city,

The street and my house, it had to be.

“This is what I’m fighting for.”, said to myself,

The fruit of my soldier life, presented itself.

Stood at my door, rang the bell, as always,

The house looked very festive during the holidays.

With opened doors, my wife in tears,

I looked at my boy , with no fears.

“Papa, papa!!!”, he jumped on me,

Never felt this happiness even in the army.

“Welcome home, my love.”, my wife said,

And then hugged me, like I rose from the dead.

“Merry Christmas guys!”, said I, smiled and cried.

I prayed, my heart filled with pride,

“Thank you, lord, for this beautiful night,

And filling my soul with such a bright light.”
