“Happy New Year. A very happy new year, babe.”, I hugged her and then looked into her eyes and kissed her softly, “And Happy Birthday to you, my precious love.” She was blushing and sweating. “Thank you, dear. Happy New Year to you too.”, she kissed me again.

After finishing our parties and having senseless fun, my friends and I were walking back home. I noticed my girlfriend rather being unusually quiet. Somehow I knew that something was wrong. And to top it off, I knew that I was the reason that something was wrong. It’s a skill one learns by being with his girlfriend after a thousand apologies. So, I knew her mind was concocting some incredible inescapable question with no loophole or any unnoticeable exits. I readied myself. As we were walking, I put my hand over her shoulder and asked, “What’s wrong babe? You seem confused.”

“Why didn’t you wish me first?”, she swung the first sword instantly. I shielded it somehow, “What? I don’t understand. Really, I wished you first. Only after wishing you, I wished all my other friends there. You saw it. Come on.” I looked at my friends for some help at my rearguard and side flank and over the head and below the feet and everywhere. My beautiful supportive loyal friends indeed didn’t disappoint me. They stood by my words. “Yeah, he’s telling the truth. We all saw it. He wished you first.”, said my drunk friend patting on my back. “Don’t worry man, we got your back. You wished her first. We all saw it.”

“Thank you guys.”, I appreciated their helping drunk hands and then said to her, ” See, it’s the truth. I don’t understand what else you mean.”

She just stood there unmoved by all this overly bromance and kept staring at me. With her hands crossed and cheeks red, she continued, “You wished happy new year first. New year. And then wished me my happy birthday.”, she walked towards me and now I was pretty much convinced that I’m screwed. Again. “Why didn’t you wish me my birthday first?”

There was complete silence. The street was empty. Some firecrackers going off somewhere far in the dark skies. It was chilly already but I felt the air becoming colder around me. I just kept staring at my girlfriend. And then as I turned to my friends to have a miracle comeback for her question, I was stunned. They were bloody walking away quietly, with their heads down and few murmuring, “Rest in peace, brother. We will remember you forever.”

My mind was shouting at the top voice, “What the hell? Don’t leave me, guys! Help me!” But my mouth was all dried and sealed. I looked at my girl again, waiting patiently for my answer. I felt like my new year had already ended.

“Damn! Why didn’t I say Happy Birthday first? It almost feels like it’s my death day.”

I just wished for the countdown to happen again.
